Legendary Entertainment has optioned Pulitzer Prize-finalist Annie Jacobsen‘s nonfiction book “Nuclear War: A Scenario” with “Dune” director Denis Villeneuve attached to direct.

Deadline broke the news and says the expectation is Villeneuve will take this one on after he completes work on trilogy closer “Dune: Messiah” which hasn’t set a production start date yet.

Villeneuve would look to adapt and/or direct, producing this cautionary tale with his longtime partner Tanya Lapointe. The book explores a ticking-clock scenario about what would happen in the event of a nuclear war.

It is based on dozens of exclusive new interviews with military and civilian experts who built the weapons and have been privy to the response plans and have been responsible for those decisions should they need to be made.

Villeneuve has long indicated he may be doing another project before ‘Messiah’ but whether that’s still the case isn’t clear. Either way, this one is likely some time off.

Legendary is coming off the massive success of “Dune: Part Two” and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” which have dominated cinemas around the world for the past few weeks.
