The two biggest films of the Summer, both of which star real-life husband-and-wife Tom Holland and Zendaya, have set new box-office records.
First up, Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” has now reached $1.59 billion worldwide and, in doing so, has crossed another record.
It has become the 17th movie to surpass $1 billion at the overseas box office, but the first since “Avatar” back in 2009 that is not a sequel or a remake. Outside the United States, the film has pulled in $1.014 billion.
The movie has smashed multiple records across its run, including becoming the highest-grossing film ever in IMAX with more than $457 million worldwide. The film’s run in 70MM IMAX auditoriums is expected to continue until the end of this month.
Meanwhile, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has now crossed the $900 million mark – the title hit $900 million today – only the second film to do so after “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”.
The film hit that mark 36 days into its run, whereas the “Star Wars” sequel took 50 days to reach that mark.
The next big domino it’s expected to topple is the $936 million total domestic gross of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”. By the end of the U.S. Labor Day holiday weekend, the title is expected to hit around $918 million and is likely to beat the J.J. Abrams-directed film around mid-September.
