When you drop a multiverse movie that grosses more than $1.9 billion at the box office and still sits on the list as the sixth-highest-grossing film ever, it makes all sorts of things possible that might have previously been thought of as impossible, like Sam Raimi finally making his Spider-Man 4 with Toby Maguire.

Strange move, but this is Hollywood, money talks, and that is a lot of money. Somebody closer to the detail thinks it might happen, too.

Actor Thomas Haden Church took on the role of Flint Marko/Sandman in Spider-Man 3, and returned in Spider-Man: No Way Home. He always said returning to the role was great fun. In an interview with ComicBook.com, Church talked about the role and was asked if a return was on the cards:

“Sandman, there’s been some rumors that they might ask me to do another Spider-Man, and I’d do it tomorrow.

You know, they’ve never asked me to show up in another movie, another Marvel film. But, you know, I think Sam is gonna do another Spider-Man with Tobey [Maguire], and that’s the one that…

…They had an option for me to do Spider-Man 4 when there was going to be a Spider-Man 4. They had an option on me to come back. So if it happens, that would be fantastic. I’m getting a little old.”

Spider-Man 3 earned $336.5 million in North America and $558.4 million in other countries for a worldwide total of $894.9 million. Worldwide, it was the third-highest-grossing film of 2007.

Raimi himself would later call the film “awful” during a 2014 interview. In 2018, Avi Arad accepted responsibility for pushing Raimi to include Venom in the film.

In 2021, Raimi acknowledged that the negative internet reaction to Spider-Man 3 at the time felt “awful” and had been difficult for him to take, but when his agent told him that he was being considered by Marvel Studios to direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), he wondered if he could do another superhero film but ultimately decided to direct the film.
