Young British actor Alfie Williams, who played the young survivor Spike in the first two “28 Years Later” films, has reignited talk of the trilogy capper.
In a new Instagram post, the actor is seen somewhere indoors holding a bow and arrow and shooting distance targets. He captions the post “It’s Great to be Back”.
The posting has immediately led to speculation that he’s suggesting that production on a third film is gearing up in some way. Others suggest he’s simply doing archery as a hobby.
Confusion is still swirling as to whether Sony will proceed with Danny Boyle and Alex Garland’s proposed final chapter. Sony Pictures did indicate earlier this year that they were moving forward with a third film.
That was before “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” opened. Though scoring critical acclaim and high audience scores across the board, the release of that second film so soon after the more divisive first one (just six months) seemed to lead to audiences skipping the film.
Streaming didn’t help either, with the film reportedly having a weak debut on Netflix. Ultimately, the studio is rumored to have lost around $20 million on the feature, so hesitation on their part to proceed with another makes sense.
On the flipside, the return of star Cillian Murphy in a major capacity, combined with the angle of being able to sell it as a ‘final’ entry, could offer the chance of a more lucrative final instalment.
