Buoyed by the success of superheroes, ancient epics, indie horror and animated fare, tracking firm Rentrak reports that the U.S. Summer box-office is on track to smash the all-time record.
The group says they expect this weekend’s three-day domestic box-office total to be $88 million, which would bring the entire Summer box-office total up to $4.732 billion by the end of Sunday – the second-best summer ever.
However, the official end of the summer box office is the Labor Day holiday on Monday, and if that Monday brings in a further $25-27 million as projected, then it could beat the previous all-time record set in 2013 of $4.758 billion.
To be fair, 2026 has a bit of an advantage with the box-office Summer running 130 days this year compared to 123 days in 2013 so technically it’s a bit of a cheat.
It’ll be a photo finish either way, with the difference coming down to as little as $1-3 million. Final numbers won’t be known until Tuesday morning.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” came on top over the holiday weekend with the title expected to garner $23.3 million over the four day holiday.
