Christopher Nolan‘s new film adaptation of Homer’s “The Odyssey” is reportedly on track for an opening of $80-100 million when it opens in cinemas on July 17th.
What the final total will be is anyone’s guess. “Oppenheimer” famously was projected for a $40-50 million start, but as the Barbenheimer event took off it opened to effectively double that with $82.4 million.
With this, while the IMAX sales have been immense, no one is quite clear how much cinephiles and Nolan fans are currently skewing the results.
If it holds, it’ll be Nolan’s third-best opening behind only “The Dark Knight” and “The Dark Knight Returns”. Nolan has the only wide release on that weekend.
The film has been subjected to some controversy over casting choices – one over Elliot Page being cast as Achilles (which turned out not to be the case), and the other over Lupita N’yongo as Helen of Troy.
The film is famously forgoing early word of mouth screenings involving influencers but will be shown to media starting with the UK world premiere on July 6th.
