Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” has overtaken “Deadpool & Wolverine” to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.
As of today, the Nolan film is up to $1.34 billion worldwide, surpassing the $1.33 billion the Marvel film did in 2024. Nolan also holds the fourth place record with “Oppenheimer” at $983 million (“Joker” is third with $1.07 billion)
Domestically, The Merc with a Mouth is still in front at $632 million to “The Odyssey” at $515 million. Nolan’s film could potentially surpass it if business for keeps going into September.
The film has become the most successful movie of Christopher Nolan’s career with box-office prognosticators estimating the movie will finish at around $1.6 billion worldwide – surpassing Nolan’s previous highest-grossing film, “The Dark Knight Rises,” at $1.08 billion.
What Nolan does after this remains unclear, the filmmaker essentially has carte blanche to do whatever he wants and “The Odyssey” showed he can command a massive budget because his films will make it back.
“Deadpool” star Ryan Reynolds has congratulated the film on social media for beating his record, adding “that is one helluva car.”
