This comes from the British tabloids, so treat it as broadly unconfirmed. The Sun Is reporting that the BBC is having trouble finding a new Doctor Who.
There is a Christmas special in the works right now, nd the last season of Doctor Who finished with the Doctor regenerating into somebody with the form and face of Rose Tyler (Billie Piper).
Tyler was the relaunched Doctor’s first, and arguably most famous companion.
It is thought that this will be the “Doctor” in some form in the special, but that Piper will not play the Doctor going forward. Piper is licked into a new series of Wednesday. Therefore she will regenerate into the new Doctor at the end of the special.
There is the problem. The BBC is struggling to find anyone to take on the role.
Traditionally one of the greatest gigs in British TV, recently a gateway to a decent career for people like David Tennant and Matt Smith, it has recently become something of a curse thanks to the BBC, and the creative team, being so achingly obsessed with “the message” that it has driven away viewers.
Add to this the uncertainty over the future direction and timescales of the continuing show, and it is a hard role to fill now.
It represents a multi-year commitment so could block out an actors diary for a long time.
Without certainty, a whole raft of promising young actors will be unable and unwilling to commit to the role.
The tabloid favorite, a “source”, says:
“Despite once being one of TV’s most coveted roles, it’s now seen as a bit of a poisoned chalice. Plus, anyone taking on the job will want to know if it’s going to be a one-off festive special or go beyond that as they will want to plan their workload over coming years.”
Disney+ walked away from extending the deal after Russell T. Davies personal obsessions were too much for even them, leaving the worlds longest running and most successful sci-fi serial facing this uncertain future.
I am a grumpy, middle-aged man with delusions of universe saving grandeur. Maybe I should throw my hat in the ring.
