A new report is indicating that Jay Roach (“Bombshell,” “Austin Powers,” “Meet the Parents”) is set to direct “The Roses,” a remake of Danny DeVito’s famed divorce-themed black comedy “The War of the Roses” according to DanielRPK.
In addition, Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman will star in this new version which is being penned by “Poor Things” and “The Favorite” writer Tony McNamara who also created Hulu’s “The Great”.
The project has been setup at Searchlight and is eyeing a June 2024 production start.
Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner starred in the original 1989 film about a wealthy couple – Oliver and Barbara Rose – with a seemingly perfect marriage. As it begins to fall apart, material possessions become the center of an outrageous and bitter divorce battle.
The original marked a third teaming of Douglas, Turner and DeVito who all worked together on Robert Zemeckis’ 1984 classic “Romancing the Stone” and its sequel “The Jewel of the Nile”.
The film has scored very positive reviews for its pitch black comedy, performances and direction and was a financial success – garnering $160 million worldwide from a $26 million budget.
