The finalists for the 2024 Hugo Awards have been announced, celebrating the best science fiction or fantasy works and achievements of 2023.

The Hugo is widely considered the premier award in the genre and whilst it mostly deals with literary works, it has three key screen awards for film, TV and gaming.

On the film front the nominees this year are “Barbie,” “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” “Nimona,” “Poor Things,” “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and “The Wandering Earth II”.

TV is where a Hugo Award honor is considered a real feather in the cap of any show as awards like Emmys tend to ignore genre efforts.

This year saw six nominations split between four shows. The celebrated ‘Long, Long Time’ third episode of “The Last of Us,” and the series finale of “Loki” titled ‘Glorious Purpose’ both scored nominations.

The second and third “Doctor Who” 60th Anniversary Specials (“Wild Blue Yonder,” “The Giggle”) both scored nominations, as did “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” for its ‘Lower Decks’ crossover episode “Those Old Scientists” and its musical episode “Subspace Rhapsody”.

Finally, the Game or Interactive Work award nominees for the year are “Alan Wake 2,” “Baldur’s Gate 3,” “Chants of Sennaar,” “Dradge,” “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” and “Star Wars Jedi: Survivor”.

1720 valid nominating ballots were received and counted with the award winners to be announced on August 11th.
