Ahead of his reboot of “Carrie” hitting Amazon early next month, filmmaker Mike Flanagan has offered an update on a number of projects he’s attached to.
The most notable, of course, is the long-gestating reboot of Stephen King’s fantasy saga “The Dark Tower”. Speaking with EW, Flanagan has revealed that despite various delays, the TV series project is still “very much on the table” at Amazon.
Asked if his new “Carrie” has links to the project (multiple King works have ties to “The Dark Tower”), Flanagan says:
“I may have asked this very question several times along the way. It’s certainly not impossible. There are characters in the ‘Tower’ canon who would serve a very specific purpose in that story, who audiences wouldn’t necessarily recognize because they only exist in certain books.”
He adds that the scope of the series remains daunting: “To do it the way I wanna do it requires an enormous commitment from a studio” and adds that his shifting of his home base from Netflix to Amazon “didn’t make it easier”. Rights are a big issue as well:
“The way the Dark Tower universe is connected, you’ve got characters in there that are all over the place when it comes to studio ownership. So the development process on it has been epic. It, of course, has taken much longer than I’d like it to, but I work on it all the time. It’s never stopped moving. It just moves at its own oil-tanker pace.”
He adds that both it and the Henry Cavill-led “Warhammer 40,000” series he’s also attached to “will take their own time and they set their own schedule”.
Flanagan also spoke with Collider about his take on King’s “The Mist”. Frank Darabont previously adapted the novella quite closely right up until its shocking last five minutes which was a big change.
Much like with his new “Carrie”, Flanagan isn’t interested in doing a loyal adaptation, as that’s already been done:
“The differences start page 1. I’m writing it now. The Mist is going to be great. If there wasn’t an excellent answer to ‘why’, I wouldn’t do it. I love Darabont’s film, and there’s zero point in remaking it. Which is why I’m going in a different direction. I learned a long ago never to try to predict what the fans will or won’t argue about… but yeah, this isn’t a retread.”
“Carrie” premieres on Amazon on October 9th while the Flanagan-directed “The Exorcist: Martyrs” releases early next year in cinemas.
