Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that the next “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie will serve as a full reboot of the franchise.
To date there have been five films in the franchise from the original in 2003 though to ‘Dead Men Tell No Tales’ in 2017. Previously it wasn’t clear if they would try and get actor Johnny Depp back or go for a full reboot.
Out promoting Guy Ritchie’s upcoming “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare,” the famed producer says the next entry in the series won’t have to wait around for actors to get onboard.
Talking to ComicBook.com, he explains how these big franchise sequels come together when he said:
“You don’t know how they come together. You just don’t know. Because with Top Gun you have an actor [Tom Cruise] who is iconic and brilliant. And how many movies he does before he does Top Gun, I can’t tell you. But we’re gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors.”
Previously, “The Last of Us” co-creator and showrunner Craig Mazin revealed that he and Ted Elliot had begun developing the new film, which they pitched to Disney, thinking it would never fly: “[We] thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird. And they did.”
