Incredibly prolific Oscar and Grammy-winning composer Hans Zimmer has a career that spans over four decades, and recently made it clear he has no intention of slowing down.
The “Dune,” “The Dark Knight” and “The Creator” composer was recently asked at a live event The Whitby Hotel in New York City about whether he had any plans for retirement. His answer? He says (via Indiewire:
“Are you kidding me? I’ve played all my life. Why would I stop playing? Why would I stop living a playful life? Why would I stop trying to, you know, invent things? Why would I?
He adds that somewhere in the back of his mind lies a “piece of music I have not written that I think is really good, but I don’t know how to get to it.” So he keeps scrambling and working until he can get to that piece.
It’s his ultimate goal it seems: “Everything is an experiment. Everything is just trying to get a little bit closer to, I don’t know, some emotional truth.”
He also says he listens to very little music, especially when writing, because he finds himself comparing himself to music works he adores. As for his taste, he says:
“It’s Beethoven, Manu Chao, it’s The Clash – it’s a lot of The Clash! It’s a lot of Tangerine Dream. For somebody who had such a poor classical education, my knowledge of classical music stuff is good, but my knowledge of the damn Sex Pistols is probably better.”
Zimmer’s work is in cinemas now with both”Dune: Part Two” and “Kung Fu Panda 4” which he co-composed with regular collaborator Steve Mazzaro. He also has “Mufasa: The Lion King” on the way.
