Mad Max really is a game of two halves. The first two movies are highly profitable. Mad Max was the top-grossing Australian film, and was credited for further opening the global market to Australian New Wave films.
For twenty years, it held the record in the Guinness Book of Records for the most profitable film ever made. The Blair Witch Project claimed the record in 1999.
The final two movies are seen as big commercial flops. So the franchise finds itself at something of a crossroads.
As the man behind the movies, Australian filmmaker George Miller, is now 81 years old, it seems he has an endgame in mind. Puck News claims that Miller has been in Hollywood meeting with studios about a plan for his exit from the franchise.
The pitch is for a final movie, and then a TV series with Miller selling off the rights in the process. The catch? Those bad losses for the last two movies.
Amazon, Universal, and Sony Pictures are all interested, but the natural home of Mad Max is Warner Bros. They are being bought by Paramount Skydance, and still bruised by the last two failures, so they are not able to take part in any bidding.
Miller did talk to them, but they passed.
Will Tom Hardy return? Will Mel Gibson feature as an older Max Rockatansky? Is it only people on the internet who still care, hence the failure of the last two movies financially?
