HBO’s “The Batman” spin-off series “The Penguin” has been a big success for the premium cabler.
On a recent Warner Bros. Discovery earnings call, they indicated the crime-drama has pulled in their most successful numbers globally since their two bigger juggernauts of recent years – “The Last of Us” and “House of the Dragon”.
Though designed as a limited series, it has led to the obvious question as to whether the series could continue with a second season. We’ve seen several series of late change from limited to seasonal, HBO did it before too with “Big Little Lies”.
So what are the chances? Turns out, according to executive producer Matt Reeves, some very preliminary discussions underway about where a potential second season could go. He tells EW:
“We are, in a very preliminary way — me, Lauren, [Reeves’ producing partner] Dylan [Clark], and Colin — starting to talk about what would be the way.
For me, what’s really important is that we earn it. The idea of revisiting means that we have to keep that same bar. I know that none of us wants to go back and just do more. We want to go back and do something great.
So that’s what we’re talking about now. We do believe that there’s going to be something in there, but it’s just beginning. It’s exciting though. It’s very gratifying.”
Reeves admits “there’s an urgency” from the network to know his plans but he says “I couldn’t tell you what the timeline is yet”. Reeves is presently busy gearing up to shoot “The Batman Part II” throughout the first half of next year.
“The Penguin” ended with 2.1 million U.S. cross-platform viewers tuning in across HBO and Max for the finale on Sunday – that’s up 50% from its debut night viewership. The full series is now up at Max.
