Ryan Reynolds has led the tributes to art director and production designer Ray Chan, who has passed away. Chan worked on most of Marvel‘s biggest films. His passing was first noted by Marvel Studios themselves, who released a statement.

Within minutes, the cast and crew who had worked with him across the whole range of Marvel projects paid their respects.

Chan worked on Thor: The Dark World, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Doctor Strange, Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.

He was art director on Spider-Man: Far From Home, and then became production designer on The Falcon And The Winter Soldier and the soon-to-be-released Deadpool & Wolverine.

TMZ reported on his unexpected death and the tributes. According to their reports, Reynolds was particularly upset, having worked so closely with him on the third Deadpool picture.

“As valuable a creative force on Deadpool & Wolverine as the writers, director and stars…He built worlds from scratch – and did so in the most collaborative and inclusive ways. Ray was peerless.”

Ryan Reynolds

“Ray was first and foremost a good friend to everyone at Marvel Studios. He was a talented collaborator who brought creativity and attention to detail to every frame of every movie he worked on, and who was able to bring out the best in each department he worked with.”

Kevin Feige

“The loss of Ray is devastating to all of us who worked on Deadpool & Wolverine. Ray did more than design the world of our movie; he lit up the world around him. Truly, anyone who knew Ray, or was lucky enough to collaborate with him as we were, experienced this beacon of a man… He will be deeply missed but forever remembered.”

Shawn Levy

He wasn’t just a Marvel designer. His resume included Children of Men, National Treasure, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Nanny McPhee, Blood Diamond, Robin Hood, and Wrath of the Titans.

He was nominated for an Art Director’s Guild Award five times, winning twice.
