Warner Bros. and Legendary’s “Dune: Part Two” has whipped up a sandstorm at the box-office, delivering $81.5 million domestically and a further $97 million overseas for a worldwide start of $178.5 million – and that’s before China and Japan get it.

Domestically it took in double the first film, landing easily the biggest opening of the year to date and the biggest since the “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” concert film back in October.

It’s also the biggest opening to date for director Denis Villeneuve and actor Timothee Chalamet. The numbers beat expectations with the studio going into the weekend targeting a $65M domestic and $75M overseas haul.

IMAX cinemas pulled in $32.2 million of the total global gross, around 18%, with a bigger percentage domestically. Ten glboal markets seeing the biggest opening ever on IMAX.

Powered by an A CinemaScore in exit polls, which beats the A- of the first film, it’s expected the movie will have legs for weeks to come.

“Bob Marley: One Love” dropped 45% in its fourth weekend to $7.4 million to a domestic total of $82.8 million and a global tally of $146.1 million.

“Ordinary Angels” was third with $3.8 million, “Madame Web” was fourth with $3.2 million, and faith-based TV series “The Chosen” was fifth with $3.15 million.
