In the wake of the film pulling in a better-than-expected $20.8 million opening this weekend, Angel Studios has reportedly given the green light to a sequel to Jon Erwin’s historical period drama “Young Washington”.
It’s the best opening for a live-action feature from the faith-based distributor, beating “Sound of Freedom” at $19.6 million, and well ahead of the $15 million that was projected going into the weekend.
Erwin has now taken to social media to announce that a Revolutionary War follow-up titled “1776” is already in the works.
The film reportedly played strong in the Mountain, Midwest, Southcentral, and South regions in the U.S., with the over-55 crowd turning up in droves and granting the film an A CinemaScore.
Critical reviews were decidedly mixed, but audience reviews on aggregate sites are high – especially Rotten Tomatoes where it sits at 94%.
William Franklyn-Miller, Ben Kingsley, Andy Serkis, Mary-Louise Parker and Kelsey Grammer star in the film.
