Sony Pictures’ “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which has received near-universal praise for its marketing so far, has unexpectedly found itself on the receiving end of backlash to something completely unrelated to the film.
The other day, Sony’s PlayStation gaming division announced plans to stop manufacturing game discs in January 2028. While the studio likely expected some bad PR from the announcement, the negative response has been less of a wave and more of a tsunami.
The news has made headlines and generated editorials across the world and, combined with Rockstar Games’ GTA6 ‘code in a box’ announcement the other week, has sparked real discussions about digital ownership in the modern age. Other corporations have been making fun of the decision in social media posts, while game fans have been roasting the company – some playfully, some with real anger.
That reaction now spilled over into “Spider-Man”. A posting on X the other day teased that it was only 30 days until “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” hit cinemas. That posting has been on the receiving end of over 8,000 comments – many of which are people trolling the company and calling for a PS6 boycott.
It’s incredibly unlikely that the controversy will have any impact on ticket sales for the new “Spider-Man” film though.
The PlayStation news has also triggered a more serious response with Game Reactor reporting that consumer groups are taking the company to court in several countries.
Almost all argue that the transition to an all-digital model could grant Sony an unchecked monopoly over PlayStation game distribution and thus potentially run into issues with competition law.
Sony itself indicated in its original statement that customers will still be able to buy games from retailers, but presumably only in the form of digital codes rather than discs. Details on that front still remain scant.
The “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” press tour seems to be on hold for the moment as its two lead stars, Tom Holland and Zendaya, have been doing “The Odyssey” press for the past few days.
It’ll no doubt start again soon ahead of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” opening in cinemas on July 31st, the film expected to have the biggest opening weekend of the year.
