Author Tomi Adeyemi, who penned the celebrated 2018 novel “Children of Blood and Bone,” has unexpectedly and publicly announced she’s distancing herself from the upcoming film adaptation of her work.

Adeyemi co-wrote and executive produced the adaptation of the action fantasy work, which has been directed by filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood.

The film premiered its first footage at CinemaCon back in April to what is said to have been a soft response according to WoR, with Paramount having set a January 15th 2027 release date.

Months on, Adeyemi has now used TikTok to say she won’t speak about the film:

“There is a reason I will not post anything about the adaptation of my work… I have not seen the film, and I will not watch it. It’s been painful holding this back from you all. … And I’m sorry if any of you thought I didn’t care about US. More than any glitter.”

Adeyemi also shared a screenshot of a message she appears to have sent to actress Amandla Stenberg (“The Acolyte”), who plays Princess Amari in the film, back in late February. In the text, the author writes to the actor: “Do not ever use my name in an interview or video again. Do not text me. Do not call me.”

Why she has chosen to do this is unclear, though the project did engage in reshoots earlier this year. Paramount made it a point that Adeyemi had creative control over the screenplay early on.

The story follows Zelie (Thuso Mbedu), a young woman living in a fantasy African kingdom who embarks on a quest to reclaim the magic that the ruthless King Saran (Chiwetel Ejiofor) violently stole from her people.

She and her older brother Tzain (Tosin Cole) as they form an alliance with the king’s daughter, Princess Amari (Stenberg), and son, Prince Inan (Damson Idris), to resist his brutal rule.

Also starring are Viola Davis as Mama Agba, Cynthia Erivo as Admiral Kaea, Idris Elba as Lekan, Lashana Lynch as Jumoke, Diaana Babnicova as Folake and Regina King as Queen Nehanda.
