Universal Pictures has officially set a June 30th 2028 release date for a “Shrek” spin-off movie, one centering on Eddie Murphy’s Donkey.

A while back Murphy revealed plans for Donkey to get his own movie, which he described as a “little story with his dragon wife and his kids that are half-dragon and half-donkeys…They’ve written this funny story.”

Now it’s finally happening and is said to be an “origin story on how a donkey became the Donkey”. Further plot specifics are under wraps.

“The Lego Ninjago Movie” director Charlie Bean and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” story artist Matt Flynn will co-direct the film while Rebecca Huntley will produce.

The film seems to replace an untitled Illumination event film that Universal had earmarked for that date. It’ll go up against the DC Studios Dynamic Duo animated movie and Paramount’s “Call of Duty” movie.

Prior spin-offs, namely the two “Puss in Boots,” grossed a combined $1 billion. The overall “Shrek” franchise has made $4 billion to date.

“Shrek 5” is set to open in cinemas on June 30th 2027.
