Acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa is stepping into new territory with The Samurai and the Prisoner, his very first samurai epic after directing more than 30 films over a remarkable four-decade career.
Set during Japan’s turbulent feudal era, the story unfolds inside Arioka Castle, where Lord Araki Murashige finds himself trapped as the forces of legendary warlord Oda Nobunaga lay siege outside the walls. As if the looming battle weren’t enough, a series of impossible murders begins to tear the isolated court apart from within. Desperate to uncover the killer before paranoia destroys everything, Murashige turns to an unlikely ally—a brilliant military strategist imprisoned in his own dungeon.
Oscar-winning Departures star Masahiro Motoki leads the cast as the desperate lord, while Masaki Suda portrays the imprisoned genius Kanbei, whose razor-sharp mind may be the castle’s only hope. The ensemble also features Yuriko Yoshitaka, Joe Odagiri, Munetaka Aoki, Ryota Miyadate, and Tasuku Emoto.
Blending samurai action with an intricate locked-room murder mystery, The Samurai and the Prisoner promises suspense, political intrigue, and psychological tension, making it one of the year’s most intriguing Japanese films.
Fresh from its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, the historical mystery has already attracted major attention, with Janus Films set to release it in U.S. theaters on July 31.
