I am not sure what happened to Angelina Jolie. She exploded onto the A-list with the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Girl, Interrupted in 1999, before her turn as Lara Croft turned her into a sex symbol and a blockbuster star. Mr & Mrs Smith, The Good Shepherd, Salt, Wanted… she was absolutely everywhere, until she wasn’t.
She did make something of a pivot into directing and spent a lot of time as a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, but her profile lowered from those late 1990s / early 2000s periods where she was arguably the biggest female movie star at that time.
She does still turn up from time to time, and now Vertical has released a new trailer for Couture, in which Jolie stars as Maxine, an American filmmaker who arrives in Paris during Fashion Week. Drawn into a love story with a familiar collaborator as her path intersects with women of different ages and cultural backgrounds – all fighting to take control of their own destinies – Maxine finds herself on a deeply personal journey of self-discovery that forces her to confront the choices shaping her life.
Quoted about the film, Jolie said:
“Too often, films about women’s struggles — especially cancer — talk about endings and sadness, rarely about life. Alice has made a film about life, and that’s precisely why the sensitive subjects it addresses are handled with such delicacy.”
The movie has also been described as her most personal role yet.
Couture co-stars Louis Garrel, Ella Rumpf, and Garance Marillier. It is written and directed by Alice Winocour (Proxima) and is released on June 26th.
