Warner Bros. has a brand new label for more “speciality” content. No, not gentlemen’s rhythm material. They haven’t started a grot studio. Clockwork was founded to focus on lower-budget films either acquired or made in-house, and “targeted mainly at digital natives and Gen Z audiences” with innovative marketing campaigns. It plans to release two to three titles annually. One of them could be Rattlecreek, which isn’t just the noise my knees make when I stand up too quickly on cold days.
To give it the full title, it is The Brigands of Rattlecreek, and it is Western with a serious cast building. This includes Matthew McConaughey, Austin Butler, Outpost favorite Pedro Pascal, and Tang Wei (yes, the Tang Wei!).
The rest of the package is just as impressive, with Park Chan-Wook directing, and Park teaming with Bradley Fischer (Shutter Island) to produce. There is a $60 million-budget, and the script by S. Craig Zahler (Bone Tomahawk, Brawl in Cell Block 99) topped the 2006 Black List.
According to Variety, Clockwork is in exclusive negotiations for a North American deal for the rights for about $15 million.
The Brigands of Rattlecreek follows a sheriff and a doctor who seek revenge against a group of bandits who use the cover of a torrential thunderstorm to rob and terrorise the occupants of a small town. It was previously known as The Brigands of Rattleborge and was trapped in development hell.
Filming aims to begin in early 2027. This will be the third title from Clockwork, after Sean Baker’s Ti Amo! and the restored re-release of Ken Russell’s The Devils, formally where Vanessa Redgrave and Oliver Reed earned an X-rating and got banned in several countries.
