At last report about two years ago, HBO was no longer developing its planned “Game of Thrones” spin-off sequel series centering around Kit Harington’s Jon Snow character.
Harington broke the news at the time, saying it was off the table because “we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough”.
HBO has been developing multiple spin-off series since “Game of Thrones” finished with both “House of the Dragon” and “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” making it to air.
All have been prequels, whereas the original plan for “Snow” was to be a sequel series centering on Snow as he travelled north of The Wall – presumably to the now abandoned lands of the White Walkers.
Appearing at this weekend’s Motor City Comic Con, Harington says he remains open to reprising the role but there’s been no further movement on the show (via SFF Gazette):
“It’s open knowledge that we tried to make a Jon Snow show for a little while, and just couldn’t. My main thing is not wanting to go there and do an injustice by the character. I think he ended well. I think that he went where he was meant to. So if you pick him up again, it needs to be for the right reasons.
But I did feel there was something left to say. And I did think the idea of exploring something entirely around him or a lot around him, would be interesting. Because remember, in Game of Thrones, you’re part of a huge ensemble.
It would be quite an excuse to get a character dive more focused on. That’s why I was intrigued. But we couldn’t find the right thing. So we put it down. For the moment.
Maybe there’ll be a time…you know, he’s not dead, and that’s the amazing thing, is that he could be picked up again. And I also feel a lot older and wiser than I was when… maybe not wiser, than I was when I left Game of Thrones.
There might be part of me that wants to go back and re-look at the character. I don’t know yet, but there’s nothing being planned at the moment.”
Harington was reportedly working with writers from his “Gunpowder” series to explore Snow as a broken man with PTSD and now living alone. Another sequel series, this time focusing on Arya Stark in Essos, is reportedly still in consideration.
