Gather, dear Outposters, to the great and powerful halls and prepare for another great debate. You can use your wits, skills and intelligence to put over your point in a logical argument. Failing that, we can just resort to violence or childish name-calling.

This week, we had the news that Hollywood wants to remake Escape from New York. As we all know, Hollywood is out of all new ideas and can now only recycle movies we all know and love. OK, love for Escape from New York is a strong term, but you get the point.

However, Escape from New York is a cult classic now. You had the combination of John Carpenter and Kurt Russell, the rest of the cast, a good story, and it came out at the right time.

It may not be the best example, but Klaatu B Necktie said that it was “lightning in a bottle”. It’s one of those movies that just works; it cannot be rebooted, redone, or re-anythinged.

This got me thinking about the great debate about what other movies are like that. We know that most remakes just don’t work; they come out and are instantly forgotten about. Mostly because the original worked for a reason, it just hit the right spot at the right time; lightning in a bottle.

So, the question of the debate today is:

What movies do you consider to be lightning in a bottle?

A movie like The Matrix got everything right: the cast, the story, the effects, the gung-fu; it was lightning. What other movies are like that, movies that should never be remade, or should never have been remade?
