A live-action TV series of The Phantom is in the works from Candy Cane and filmmaker Reginald Hudlin. According to Variety, Hudlin will direct and produce the series, which is in the development stage at the moment.
The Phantom comic book strip first debuted 90 years ago. The Ghost Who Walks character is credited as the first costumed superhero. According to Variety, he pre-dates Batman and Superman, but I’m not an expert.
The Phantom has received more attention in recent years with digital editions of the comic. This included a launch of Phantom 2040 by Alex Segura, who put a modern twist on the classic mythology.
Billy Zane took on the role of The Phantom in 1996. It didn’t do well at the box office, but became a bit of a cult classic, even getting a 4k digital release. Even with the mixed reviews, Zane loved the role:
“It got a lot of stick early on because it wasn’t edgy at a time when all those movies were going dark. I’ve always held a torch for what I saw as a dying genre, which was adventure. I was raised on adventure, and I think it’s so easily overlooked as how critical it is to young boys and girls.”
I haven’t seen The Phantom movie in a while, but I need to check it out again now. There is no news about when the series is coming out.
