The problem with the Jason Bourne movies is that they ended up trapped in their own mythology, just like the books.

There are now 21 books in the series, most of them written by somebody other than Robert Ludlum, and they are all broadly variations on the same theme.

Something bad happens, Bourne is either blamed or impacted in some way, so he has to find a way to break cover and look into it while remaining “outside”.

It’s Treadstone, again… cue lots of people seeming totally taken by surprise that Bourne appears on the scene.

The movies found this, with a superb, tight trilogy then failing to expand its universe through a fourth movie (without Matt Damon), and eventually running out of steam by the time the Damon returned for a fifth instalment.

The spin off streaming show Treadstone was also cancelled.

“Somebody is trying to fit me up… again?”

It hasn’t stopped numerous efforts to continue the franchise. The rights expired, meaning that they were up for grabs.

Universal won them back again, then tapped up Conclave and All Quiet on the Western Front director Edward Berger to helm a new movie.

Berger was planning to work with Damon on the project, and the script was to be written by Black Doves showrunner Joe Barton.

Now, Jeff Sneider’s The Hot Mic, has hinted that things will be moving soon, just not in the way anyone expected.

There is something big going on in relation to casting, and the rumor is that there may be a recasting of the role of Jason Bourne itself.

Damon’s last appearance in the role was back in 2016.

If this is true, then it looks like a full reboot could well be on the cards, as the specific rights Universal re-won are closely tied not just to the character in general, but the first book – The Bourne Identity — which was only lightly adapted into the movie, changing several major plot points.
