Do you ever get the feeling that Disney has never really known quite what to do with the Muppets? The 2011 movie was a big success, and everyone who ever went to a theme park enjoyed MuppetVision 3D, but sequel movies, TV shows and other efforts have fizzled.
Maybe the Muppets are just a relic of boomer and early Gen-X nostalgia, unsuited for the modern world? Well, whatever they are, Disney is trying again with a special, one-off edition of The Muppet Show.
Now, Disney has premiered a teaser for the show, which will air on February 4th on Disney+ and ABC.
Kermit, Miss Piggy and the gang are to return, with music, comedy, and a whole lot of chaos. They will take to the stage of the original Muppet Theatre.
Alex Timbers directs. Pocket-sized pop strumpet Sabrina Carpenter is the guest of honor. Veteran Muppet performers Bill Barretta, Dave Goelz, Eric Jacobson, Peter Linz, David Rudman, and Matt Vogel will perform. Pretty much the entire roster of original Muppet characters will appear.
Carpenter, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Alex McAtee, David Lightbody, Leigh Slaughter, Michael Steinbach, Albertina Rizzo, Matt Vogel, and Eric Jacobson executive produce.
Later in the year, the 50th anniversary of the Muppets will take place on September 5th and all five seasons of the classic 1970s variety show will arrive on Disney+.
