Both Dev Patel’s feature directorial debut “Monkey Man” and horror prequel “The First Omen” are coming in lower than expected at the box-office.
“Monkey Man” took in $4.1 million on Friday and is headed for a second place debut with $10.5 million – down from its predicted $12-14 million opening weekend range.
Whilst critics were fairly high on the film, audiences are more mixed with a B+ CinemaScore and a divided response from PostTrak surveys.
Meanwhile “The First Omen,” a prequel to Richard Donner’s 1976 film,” grossed $3.2 million Friday and is headed for a projected weekend opening of $8.3 million.
That’s also slightly below expectations of around $10 million and will put it in a battle for fourth or fifth place with “Kung Fu Panda 4”. Both will be behind “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” in third with around $9 million.
Warner Bros. and Legendary’s “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” will retain the crown with an $8.5 million haul on Friday and a potential second weekend haul near $30 million.
