Jonathan Levine (“Warm Bodies,” “50/50,” “Long Shot”) is currently in negotiations to direct a sequel to the Tom Cruise-led 1990 NASCAR racing drama “Days of Thunder” at Paramount Pictures.
Hailing from the original “Top Gun” team of director Tony Scott and producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, the original film received mixed reviews upon release and made just $157 million globally from a production budget of $60 million.
These days it’s mostly remembered as the film Cruise and then future wife Nicole Kidman met on, along with Scott’s robustly directed action and a solid Hans Zimmer’s musical score.
Cruise is on board to star in the follow-up and is producing with Bruckheimer. The project, which has been rumoured for many years and started taking serious shape back in 2024, is looking to be Cruise’s next film.
Levine most recently directed the David Corenswet-led sports drama “Mr. Irrelevant,” which has been scoring sky-high numbers during test screenings earlier this year. Will Staples (“Without Remorse”) is penning the script.
Cruise will be seen later this year in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s new dark comedy “Digger”.
