Amazon’s high-profile TV series adaptation of the “God of War” video game series has taken a major blow with production having hit pause.
TMZ reports that star Ryan Hurst (“The Odyssey,” “Sons of Anarchy”), who plays Kratos, was injured while filming a stunt in Vancouver. The actor reportedly tore his bicep severly enough that he’ll have to undergo surgery.
Production reportedly hoped to have him back on set for mid-August, but the recovery process is said to be too long to meet that timeline. As a result, filming may not resume on the series until 2027.
Filming on the series has been underway since February which suggests a majority of the season has already been filmed.
The story follows father and son Kratos (Hurst) and Atreus (Callum Vinson) as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.
Also in the cast are Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri and Danny Woodburn as Brok.
The series, which has been greenlit for two seasons, is based on PlayStation’s highly acclaimed ancient mythology-themed video game series – more specifically the 2018 reboot and its 2022 sequel. Ronald D. Moore (“Battlestar Galactica,” “Outlander”) serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer.
