For the movie adaptations of JK Rowling’s beloved Harry Potter novels, the character of Peeves the Poltergeist was to be played by the late, great Rik Mayall.

The character was eventually cut from the first movie by director Chris Columbus, so did not appear in any subsequent films either.

For the upcoming HBO version, they are using the luxury of long-form storytelling to put the details back in that the movies cut out. Among them is Peeves.

It has now been announced in Variety that Peter Serafinowicz has been cast in the role.

Peeves is a troublesome ghost who causes mischief in the Hogwarts halls, and turns out to have seen quite a lot over the years that becomes important to the stories.

Serafinowicz provided the voice of Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I, he was in Shaun Of The Dead, and was the sommelier in John Wick 2. Most recently he was in How to Train Your Dragon.

He is also known for several comedy shows on UK television.

He will appear alongside Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione and Alastair Stout as Ron.

Harry Potter launches this December exclusively on HBO and HBO Max.
