Over 100 critics have weighed in on a new poll for the best films of 2026 so far with Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s “Project Hail Mary” garnering the most votes.

Each critic was asked to submit their top five films to World of Reel, in no particular order, with the most frequently mentioned being ‘Hail Mary’ with 49 votes. It was a clear winner, with the next nearest being Sophy Romvari’s Canadian indie film “Blue Heron” at 38.

The remaining three of the top five were all major studio films – Nia DaCosta’s “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” with 35, Sam Raimi’s “Send Help” with 32, and Steven Spielberg’s “Disclosure Day” with 31.

Rounding out the top ten were “Obsession,” “Backrooms,” “Tuner,” “Pillion” and “Nirvanna The Band the Show the Movie”. The consensus overall has been that the first half of the year has mostly been pretty disappointing movie-wise.

Compare this to a poll taken at the same time last year, when Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” pulled in 110 votes and Steven Soderbergh’s “Black Bag” nabbed 71.

However, there’s still just over six months to go with many of the biggest potential critical hits of the year – Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Three,” David Fincher’s “The Adventures of Cliff Booth,” Alejandro Inarritu’s “Digger,” Aaron Sorkin’s “The Social Reckoning,” David O. Russell’s “Madden,” and Robert Eggers’ “Werwulf” still to come alongside various Fall festival titles.
