Hugh Jackman already played a pirate once. He was Blackbeard in Joe Wright’s big budget flop Pan. Now he’s having another go.

Ridley Scott refuses to retire, and as always, has several movies in flight at different stages of production. One of them is a retelling on Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1883 novel Treasure Island.

Variety reports that Jackman will take on the role of Long John Silver.

The script was Jack Thorne, the man behind Emmy-winning, and political hot-potato, Adolescence.

Scott will produce alongside Michael Pruss under his Scott Free banner.

The world famous story follows young Jim Hawkins as he finds a map to Captain Flint’s long-lost fortune and embarks on a perilous voyage aboard the Hispaniola.

Aboard the ship, Jim and the crew face mutiny led by the cunning, one-legged cook, Long John Silver. Trapped in a battle of wits with him, he must find a way to manoeuvre through the shifting situation to claim the treasure.

A previous telling of the story

Historically, the story is considered the root of many pirate stereotypes such as parrots on shoulders and peg legs.

The story was adapted by Disney more than once, most recently as Treasure Planet in 2002. Black Sails on Starz was a prequel to the story.

Jackman has The Death Of Robin Hood dropping next week, then he will be free to take on this project.
