The internet is ablaze with all this talk of casting for The Odyssey, but Matt Damon isn’t hanging around. He’s already setting up his next project, and it is something of a pivot from ancient Greece. He’s angling for the lead role in a major sci-fi action comedy from Oscar-winning filmmakers Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, AKA “The Daniels”.
The as-yet-untitled project from Everything Everywhere All at Once duo briefly had Ryan Gosling attached before he dropped out due to scheduling issues. Brad Pitt, Oscar Isaac, and Keanu Reeves were also in consideration, but The Hollywood Reporter says Damon is now the frontrunner.
Jack Black was also being considered for the role, which gives you an idea of the tone.
So why is Hollywood so excited about all this? Well, it’s an “event movie” apparently, and is said to involve “global warming, time travel, [and] a possible superhero angle” featuring time jumps between two timelines. One is in the 1980s, and one is in the present. The 80s will involve teenagers. So Hot Tub Time Machine, then?
The lead, potentially Damon, would play the father of one of the teens, and there would be an ensemble of young talent. It has also been described by Kwan as “very existential” and “a fun sci-fi, action comedy”.
The project is set up at Universal Pictures for a shoot this summer, ahead of a 2027 release.
