HBO has officially greenlit its “Harry Potter” TV series for a second season, the renewal order coming a full seven months before the first season’s debut.
While the first season will be based on J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” the second will adapt the second book “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” which is generally considered the weakest of the books.
Additionally, “Succession” writer Jon Brown has been bumped up to the position of co-showrunner along with season one showrunner Francesca Gardiner.
No word on any additional casting or directors for the second season, though the obvious high-profile additions will be the actors playing Gilderoy Lockhart and teenage Tom Riddle.
Shooting on the second season is scheduled to begin this fall, a little over a year after the first season began filming in July 2025. Gardiner said in a statement:
“As we have laid out our plans for the overlapping production schedules to finish season one by Christmas and to return to production for season two this autumn, it has become clear that bringing on a co-showrunner is the key to maintaining our momentum.
I’ve loved working with Jon from the very first day we met on Succession through to these recent times together on Harry Potter. Not only do I have huge admiration for his writing, but he’s also a brilliant collaborator and a lovely person. We are lucky to have him.”
The first season will debut at the end of the year on HBO.
