AMC Global Media has confirmed that the previously announced “Point Break” sequel TV series is targeting a 2027 premiere. The update came during AMC’s upfront presentation, where executives outlined their future slate.

Speaking with THR, CCO Dan McDermott says the production team is “pushing really fast” on the project.

As a result, shooting aims to begin later this year or very early next year in Australia. The goal, according to the trade, is to bring the “adrenaline-heavy spirit of the original into a modern format without losing its identity”.

Word came back in December that AMC had begun development of a series that was essentially a combination sequel/minor reboot of the iconic 1991 Kathryn Bigelow-directed action film.

Keanu Reeves starred in the film as a rookie FBI agent named Johnny Utah, who infiltrates the Ex-Presidents – a gang of Southern California surfers who rob banks. The new series would be set 35 years after the original and follow a dangerous heist crew with ties to the Ex-Presidents gang.

David Kalstein (“Treadstone,” “Butterfly”) created the series and will write and executive produce alongside Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson and Ben Roberts. The show will have no ties to the ill-fated 2015 film remake.

AMC has its acclaimed “Interview with the Vampire” returning next month in the form of “The Vampire Lestat” with series creator/showrunner Rolin Jones also working on a new “The Grapes of Wrath” adaptation for the network.
