A TV series spin-off set with the world of the “Legally Blonde” films is in development at Amazon Prime Video.

Franchise star Reese Witherspoon along with Lauren Neustadter, Marc Platt, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are executive producing for Amazon MGM Studios. “Gossip Girl” duo Schwartz and Savage are also writing the series.

No plot details are available, so it’s not clear if Witherspoon will have any on screen involvement. Amazon has been looking to develop new projects based on IP they took control of after acquiring MGM in 2022 with ‘Blonde’ cited as one such possibility

The first film was released in cinemas in 2001 with Witherspoon playing Elle Woods, a fashion-focused sorority girl who attends Harvard Law School in an attempt to win back her boyfriend. In the process, she discovers a natural aptitude for the law.

The film was a big box office success, grossing over $140 million worldwide and was followed by a sequel in 2003 titled “Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, and Blonde”. A direct-to-video third entry was released in 2009 but Witherspoon didn’t star.

A stage musical based on the first film was also released on Broadway in 2007, taking multiple Tony award nominations.
