By We’re still a good at least three or four years away from the next James Bond film hitting cinemas, and before that we have to deal with the larger question – who will play the next James Bond?
More than two years after “No Time To Die” wrapped Daniel Craig’s run, we’re still no closer to an answer to that question beyond speculative picks from the British tabloids and agents keen to push their clients.
One suggestion however came up this week from a former James Bond actor, a suggestion that’s a little out of left field but certainly has the acting chops necessary.
Pierce Brosnan, who took on the role across four films from 1995-2002, appeared at the Oscar Wilde Awards on Thursday and says he hopes his fellow Irish countryman and current Oscar Best Actor favorite Cillian Murphy will snag it. He tells The BBC: “Cillian would do a magnificent job as James Bond on His Majesty’s Secret Service”.
Luck would have it, Murphy was also in attendance at the event and was asked by Variety about the endorsement. Murphy responded: “I’m a bit old for that. I will say I think that ship has sailed.”
The oldest an actor was to play their first ‘Bond’ was Roger Moore who took on the role at 45 in “Live And Let Die”. Brosnan himself retired from the role at 49.
Previously producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson indicated that they’re looking at a 30-something actor for the Bond role and to commit to Bond films for at least a decade.
