Star Trek is not in a good place right now. Outside of Season 3, Picard was a bust. Discovery has been quiet canceled, and they can’t buy a new movie whether it is on the Prime timeline or the Kelvin timeline. The last movie was Star Trek Beyond, eight years ago and counting.

Since then aborted projects include a Quentin Tarantino version based on a classic original series episode, and a script from The Revenant writer Mark L. Smith.

WandaVision director Matt Shakman was spinning up a new fourth movie in the Kelvin timeline that would have brought back Chris Pine’s Kirk and his crew. That died when Shakman was offered Fantastic Four at Marvel.

There was a project with Birdbox and The Night Manager director Susanne Bier in the director’s chair. That also came to nothing. Jesus Chris, is Kathleen Kennedy secretly running Paramount as well?

One of the most interesting Star Trek projects was from Fargo showrunner/writer/director Noah Hawley. He had dropped hints that it was a totally new story and focused on a galactic pandemic. Then a pandemic actually happened, a management chnageover at Paramount happened, and everyone clearly got cold feet.

Appearing on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, Hawley revealed some massive news. They were talking to a double Oscar-winning team to star in the movie. Cate Blanchett and Rami Malek.

“Right, I was going to make a ‘Star Trek’ movie with Cate Blanchett and Rami Malek. You coulda had that, America… Planet Earth.”

Hawley instead jumped to Fox, and his Alien TV series will be out early next year. Star Trek, meanwhile, remains fucked.
