Vertical has premiered the trailer for the Depression-era historical drama “The Weight” starring Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe.

Set in Oregon in 1933, the story follows Samuel Murphy (Hawke), a father torn from his daughter and sent to a brutal work camp. His only apparent way out comes through Warden Clancy (Crowe), who tempts him with early release if he can smuggle gold through the dangerous wilderness.

But the journey quickly turns perilous as betrayal spreads within the crew, forcing Murphy to question how far he’ll go to see his child again.

Julia Jones, Austin Amelio, Avi Nash, and Sam Hazeldine star while Matthew Chapman and Shelby Gaines pen the screenplay from a story by Matthew Booi, Leo Scherman, and Chapman.

Padraic McKinley directs the project while Ryan Hawke, Simon Fields, Nathan Fields, Jonas Katzenstein, and Maximilian Leo produce.
Screening at Sundance to strong reviews, the film opens in cinemas on September 18th.
