The Oscars take place on Sunday with the industry already getting geared up for this year’s ceremony.
Christopher Nolan’s historical epic “Oppenheimer” is expected to dominate the line-up and, should it win, will be the highest-grossing Best Picture winner since “The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King” two decades ago.
It marked the rare film that’s both a box office smash and a critically acclaimed darling, with its success a major win for all involved. This is especially true of 53-year-old Nolan with Forbes reporting that the helmer is earning 15% of Oppenheimer’s “first-dollar gross” – a deal he took for reduced fees for directing, writing and producing.
Once agent and lawyer fees are deducted, the trade says Nolan will reportedly take in an estimated $72 million pre-tax fromt he box office haul, home video sales and licensing of the movie’s first streaming window.
That number will reportedly continue to rise as the movie gets re-sold to streamers and is licensed for years to come. Nolan has already been a frequent Oscar nominee for directing and screenwriting, with this film’s subject matter being seen as the one that will get him those awards.
Whatever Nolan’s next film is, it’s expected he will be able to land effectively whatever deal he wants.
