20th Century Studios has reportedly landed the theatrical distribution rights to Imagine Entertainment’s thriller “Whalefall”. The studio beat out multiple bidders for the project.

“No One Will Save You” helmer Brian Duffield has been attached to co-write, direct, and produce the film based on the recently published novel by bestseller Daniel Kraus.

Dubbed “The Martian meets 127 Hours,” the project follows a scuba diver who goes in search of his deceased father’s remains.

During his search he gets swallowed by an eighty-foot, sixty-ton sperm whale and has only one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out.

Initially giving up on life, the despondent young man is surprised to find a reason to live in this most dangerous and unlikely of places – a whale’s insides.

Kraus will co-write the film with Duffield, Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Allan Mandelbaum set to produce.

Duffield’s almost dialogue-free “No One Will Save You” scored strong reviews last year and topped streaming ratings for the week of its release. He also wrote the Kristen Stewart-led subnautical horror feature “Underwater”.
