David Jenkins, the creator of Max pirate comedy “Our Flag Means Death,” says he’s given up on finding a new home for the cancelled series.
In an new posting on Instagram, he says: “I can officially confirm that we’ve reached the end of the road, at least as far as this sweet show is concerned. After many complimentary meetings, conversations, etc., it seems there is no alternate home for our crew.”
The series was amongst a number of shows axed at HBO in January and followed the second season finale which aired in late October.
The show was led by Rhys Darby as Gentleman Pirate Stede Bonnet and Taika Waititi as the gruff Captain Blackbeard/Edward Teach.
Though initially sold as a high seas comedy farce, by the back half of the first season it evolved into one of the most inclusive shows on television with acclaimed treatment of multiple LGBTQ+ romances – including its core Stede & Blackbeard relationship which saw genuine evolution.
Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Matthew Maher, Kristian Nairn, Con O’Neill, David Fane, Samba Schutte, Nat Faxon and Leslie Jones co-starred in the series which ran a total of eighteen episodes.
Fans were vocal, launching campaigns to save the show and fundraising for billboards in New York and London. However Max, along with almost every other streamer, is being subjected to a contraction of programming.
