Sony PlayStation is set to lay off around 900 of its employees worldwide, which is about 8% of its overall workforce.
Current SIE president and CEO Jim Ryan, who will step down next month, revealed the news and said it was an “extremely hard decision”.
The most impacted is PlayStation London Studio which is being closed entirely. It was primarily known for multiple titles in the “SingStar” franchise and the PlayStation VR Worlds compilation.
At the last report, they were developing one of Sony’s planned live service titles – an online co-op combat game set in a fantasy London.
Also impacted by workforce reductions are some of Sony’s biggest developers – Insomniac Games (“Spider-Man,” “Ratchet & Clank”), Naughty Dog (“Uncharted,” “The Last of Us’), Guerrilla Games (“Horizon: Zero Dawn,” “Killzone”) and Firesprite Studio (“Horizon: Call of the Mountain VR”).
It follows on from rival Microsoft announcing plans last month to cut 1900 staff across Xbox, Bethesda and Activision Blizzard.
It’s estimated 10,500 games industry employees were laid off last year, and two months into 2024 with the new numbers above added – the level is already at 7,000 for this year.
