Filmmaker Martin Scorsese recently joined the AI startup Black Forest Labs as an advisor, even starring in a video in which he used the company’s generative AI model to storyboard a scene for an upcoming film.
That has upset quite a few people, such as filmmaker Boots Riley, and now the Art Directors Guild which has released an official statement condemning the action.
In the statement released on social media on Tuesday, the Guild slammed the partnership saying the celebrated helmer was “turning his back” on the human artists who throughout his career have helped him create his works:
“In the recently released Black Forest Labs video promoting their generative AI product FLUX, Mr. Scorsese asks the question, ‘how do you communicate what you see in your head to your cast and crew?’
He claims the solution is the use of this generative AI program to do the jobs that are rightfully the jurisdiction of Art Directors Guild Local 800 artists and designers – human artists and designers who have been successfully collaborating with directors to visualize their films for decades.
Mr. Scorsese’s promotion of a generative AI product circumvents the input of Art Directors Guild Local 800 art directors, graphic artists, illustrators, production designers, scenic artists, set designers, and other talented Union professionals.”
In the clip, Scorsese is seen doing essentially digital storyboards for a snow-bound period film. Scorsese has most recently been filming the supernatural feature “What Happens At Night” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence.
Scorsese is also currently developing his Hawaii-set period crime film at Disney/20th Century Studios which aims to shoot next year with a script that is about ‘95% done’ with revisions coming this Summer. DiCaprio, Emily Blunt, and Dwayne Johnson star while Nick Bilton penned the script.
