Gabriel LaBelle (“The Fablemans”), Cooper Hoffman (“Licorice Pizza”) and Rachel Sennott (“Bottoms”) have been cast in Jason Reitman’s new film “SNL 1975” about the genesis of “Saturday Night Live”.
Reitman wrote the script with Gil Kenan (“Ghostbusters: Afterlife”), based on the pair’s extensive interviews with all of the show’s living cast, scribes and crew.
The project has been setup at Sony Pictures with Reitman directing. The film deals with what happened on the long-running NBC sketch show’s opening night in October 1975.
It will tell how this ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers changed television forever. The show itself is currently in the midst of its 49th season.
At the time the original cast included Second City alumni like Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi and Gilda Radner, as well as Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, Laraine Newman, Garrett Morris and George Coe who left after this single episode. George Carlin was the host for that first episode.
LaBelle will play SNL creator Lorne Michaels, Hoffman is former NBC executive Dick Ebersol, and Sennott will play Michaels’ ex-wife Rosie Shuster.
Reitman, Kenan, Jason Blumenfeld, Erica Mills and Peter Rice produce.
