“Yellowstone” co-creator Taylor Sheridan and his Bosque Ranch production company have optioned S.C. Gwynne’s book “Empire of the Summer Moon” with plans for a film adaptation reports Deadline.
Sheridan would write and direct the feature as well as produce alongside Jenny Wood. The title, previously setup at Warners, is said to be a long standing passion project of Sheridan.
The book is a historical account of the struggle between the Comanche tribe and white settlers to control the American West over nearly half a century.
Quanah Parker, considered the tribe’s greatest chief, is central to the story of the Comanches – legendary fighters able to hold off expansion attempts by both the Spanish coming up from Mexico and the French trying to spread west from Louisiana.
Settlers from Eastern states however formed the Texas Rangers and armed them with six-guns to which the Comanches couldn’t counter. The author says in a statement:
“I can’t think of anyone better qualified to bring Empire of the Summer Moon to the screen than Taylor Sheridan. He has a deep and nuanced understanding of both the myth and reality of the old West. I am thrilled that he is undertaking this project.”
No word as to when Sheridan may fit the film into his busy schedule producing multiple series for his Sheridan-verse on Paramount+ and Paramount Network.
