In the wake of this year’s “Doctor Who” Christmas special, current showrunner Russell T Davies has teased how the new series will continue the story threads setup by the special.

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR “DOCTOR WHO: THE CHURCH ON RUBY ROAD”

The special, which aired on Monday and is currently available in the UK on BBC iPlayer and around the rest of the world on the Disney+ service, focuses on new companion Ruby (Millie Gibson) was a foundling who was named after the church where she was discovered.

The episode teases several mysteries – who were Ruby’s parents, and who was the cloaked woman who left the baby on the church doorstep (and seems to be wearing boots not unlike adult Ruby herself).

There’s also the question of Ruby’s neighbour Mrs Flood (Anita Dobson), who changes her tone abruptly, breaks the fourth wall, and mentions she knows what a TARDIS is.

Davies, speaking with Digital Spy, says the mystery surrounding Ruby’s origins will be addressed across the full season, and the events of the episode will be revisited:

“You always have to be aware that it’s a new audience coming in. So you kind of start from scratch. Personally, I think it should be as Christmassy as possible. It’s amazing. We had snow, the church, but they’re always different every year.

This was quite a fable, about a foundling on the church doorstep in the snow. So that story then continues into the series. We come back to that church. There’s all sorts of things. There were people in those scenes you don’t know were there. We have a lot more to come.”

This follows on from Davies recently revealing there will be an episode featuring The Beatles. Aneurin Barnard, Jinkx Monsoon, Jemma Redgrave and Bonnie Langford will all pop up in the new eight-episode run which will air in May next year.
